THE Cumbernauld Indoor Bowling Club opened their Scottish League programme for season 2008/09 on Saturday, but unfortunately the seniors ladies and gents all suffered defeats.
The seniors entertained Whiteinch on Saturday and lost by 68 shots-58 in a keenly contested game.

The visitors settled quickly and after five ends led by 23-15.
Continuing to impress with their all round bowling, they increased their lead to 39-
29 after ten ends.

Cumbernauld, despite playing excellent bowls, could not make any impression on the score against a strong Whiteinch side. After 15 ends the visitors led by 67-52 and, in the end, thoroughly deserved their win.

Cumbernauld had one winning rink out of four. Results (Cumbernauld skips first): J. McConnachie 24, J. Rattray 13; T. Turnbull 14, G. Colquhoun 17; J. Smith 11, H. Murray 17; C. Whyte 9, C. Bruce 21.

The ladies, for the visit of local rivals Coatbridge, lost by 83 shots to 70 on Saturday. In the opening five ends the visitors led by 21-14. From that point Cumbernauld fought back strongly. The bowling was of a good standard. After ten ends Coatbridge held on to a slight advantage by 39-38.

The strong Coatbridge team continued to hold the upper hand and led by 61-5 after 15 ends to be increased to 76-59 after 18 ends.

In the end Coatbridge just deserved their win. The Cumbernauld ladies can be well pleased with their overall bowling.

Results (Cumbernauld skips first): J. Miller 25, A. McGilben 13; J. Ross 16, G. Condy 32; R. Bryceland 14, M. Mungall 17; A. Cairnie 15, J. Bray 21.

The gents were defeated by Tweedbank, Gala, away on Saturday, in their Scottish League Division one game.

The Scottish Young Indoor Bowlers Association held their national team trial on Sunday at Perth Indoor Bowling Club.

A squad of 28 players have been selected to play in the next two trials.

Two of the club's young bowlers (under 16 years of age) have been selected – Megan Ross and Scott Baxter – to play in the first trial at Alloa Indoor Bowling Club on Sunday, October 26, from noon till 4 p.m.
The club and club coach Jean Ross, congratulate the young players on their selection and wish them a successful trial.

The final trial will be held at Bainfield IBC, Edinburgh, on Sunday, November 30 from 12.30-4.30 p.m.

Dougie Geal and Jim Byron will represent the club in the National Two Bowl Pairs at Lanarkshire IBC on Sunday, commencing at 9.30 a.m. Games will be played to the semi-final stage.
