Nemphlar VC is on every PC
Appropriately, in the wake of this year's Remembrance Day, the story of William Gardner, thought to be one of only four men from our area – and the first – to win the Victoria Cross, is to be featured in a new website.
It is being launched after years of painstaking research into the lesser known and lower ranking holders of the supreme British gallantry medal.

While Carluke is justly proud of its three VC holders – two from World War One and one from World War Two – William Gardner was almost forgotten for many years, possibly because his VC was won well beyond living memory.
Indeed, he was amongst the very first recipients, winning his just a few years after the founding of the honour by Queen Victoria, initally to reward bravery in the Crimean War.
