Sparrow rescue plea made to local schools
Tree sparrows, a relative of the house sparrow, are often found nesting in the countryside and the rich farmland around Glasgow, East Lothian and Stirlingshire. Within the Central Scotland Forest (CSF) area, North Lanarkshire has historically provided the perfect habitat for the species to flourish.
However, there has been a decline in tree sparrow populations in this area in recent years which can be attributed in part to a loss of habitat and a reduction of food availability caused by changes in farming practices which have increased the use of herbicides.
